Things to do in Collingwood

Sunset Point Park

Relax on a rocky beach, explore scenic walking trails and watch windsurfers ride the waves of Georgian Bay. Enjoy a day of fun and recreation at one of Collingwood’s most popular locations, the waterfront Sunset Point Park. Set off on coastal walks, go kitesurfing and windsurfing and take in sunset views over Lake Huron. The large park encompasses a beach, playground, part of the Collingwood trail system and picnic areas. If you are feeling energetic, stretch your legs along part of the 37-mile (60-kilometer) long Collingwood Trails Network that winds through the park. The footpaths connect major Collingwood attractions and are popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. Stop by the large inukshuk, a stone monument dedicated to a local man who perished in a boating accident. During the winter, cross-country ski or snowshoe along the trails. Collect a trail map at various downtown locations, including the Collingwood Museum and the town hall.

Blue Mountain Ski Resort

Blue Mountain Ski Resort is a year-round hub of outdoor pursuits and adventures in the Niagara Escarpment. Visit in winter for the ski runs and snow-based activities. In the summer, hike through the green landscape and take part in numerous mountain sports.

Blue Mountain Ski Resort is one of Ontario’s largest and most popular mountain resorts, situated close to the southern shores of Lake Huron.

Find more than 40 ski trails with runs that are suitable for all levels of skiers. If you are a novice, sign up for lessons at the Blue Mountain Snow School. Off the slopes, activities range from snowshoeing and ice skating to caving, tobogganing and snowmobile tours. Take the children to Burton Riglet Park where they can learn how to snowboard. At the Kids’ Camp they can join in skiing and non-skiing programs.

There are still lots of reasons to visit the ski resort after the snow has melted. Take a ride in a cable car and soar above the treetops on a zip-line course. Travel through the mountainous landscape on a bike or Segway tour and test your agility on a rope course. Enjoy family-friendly activities such as the mountain roller coaster, a climbing wall and an 18-hole putting course.

No matter what time of year you visit, take advantage of the recreational and entertainment options at the Blue Mountain Village. There are restaurants, fast-food joints, pubs, cocktail bars and nightclubs. Browse the shops for art, fashion accessories, sporting apparel and much more.

Blue Mountain Ski Resort is about a 15-minute drive from Collingwood and a 2-hour drive north of Toronto. A regular bus service connects the resort with downtown Collingwood and a free shuttle bus runs through the resort. From May to September its route includes a private beach.

Blue Mountain Ski Resort is open daily, including public holidays. The ski season runs from November to April, depending on snowfall. Visit the resort’s official website for more information on opening times, activity prices, equipment rental and lodging.

Collingwood Scenic Caves

Discover one of Canada’s great natural wonders and then enjoy summer and winter sports at this family-friendly adventure center. Experience nature, history and adventure amid the stunning setting of Collingwood Scenic Caves. Explore caves that are hundreds of millions of years old, cross one of Ontario’s longest footbridges, hike to magnificent viewpoints and ski along miles of trails.

Go on a self-guided tour of the ancient cave complex and rock formations that lie partly underground. Step into the ice cave, where temperatures are so low that it remains icy for much of the year, including summer. Step inside the Bear Cave where it is thought that black bears used to sleep during the winter. Squeeze through an opening called the Fat Man’s Misery that is only 15 inches (36 centimeters) at its narrowest point.

Blue Mountain Beach

Relax on golden sands and enjoy watersports at this family-friendly private beach on Canada’s picturesque Georgian Bay. Blue Mountain Beach is an exclusive coastal escape for overnight guests of the Blue Mountain Ski Resort. This private beach sits on the southern shores of Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay. Enjoy relaxation and lots of water-based activities.

Blue Mountain Beach is a small bay of soft golden sand backed by forested hills. The water is calm and shallow making it ideal for visitors with young children, although there are no lifeguards. Find amenities such as changing rooms, showers, cafés and beach bars. Sun loungers and children’s beach toys are available free of charge. Umbrellas can be rented.

For the active beachgoer, Blue Mountain Beach offers a wealth of water and sand-based sports. Travel through the lake on a kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Try high-adrenalin watersports on weekends and during school vacations. These include waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing. Children will enjoy piloting remote control boats along the shoreline.

Out of the water, play boules, croquet, soccer and volleyball. Venture away from the beach to explore the local scenery with a hike along the Georgian Trail. This 21-mile (34-kilometer) long route stretches between the nearby towns of Meaford and Collingwood. The trail is also popular with cyclists and joggers. Bikes are available for rent at the beach. Stop off at some of the sandy beaches that are spread around Georgian Bay. These include Christie Beach, Northwinds Beach and Peasemarsh. If you are in the area during winter, go cross-country skiing along the trail.

Blue Mountain Beach is an alcohol, smoking, barbecue and pet free beach. It is open during the summer, usually between June and September. Find up-to-date information about operating hours on the official website of the Blue Mountain Ski Resort.

Blue Mountain Beach is about a 10-minute drive from the Blue Mountain Ski Resort and car parking is free. Alternatively, take the complimentary shuttle bus that runs between the ski resort and the beach.
